Distinguished and Famous people from Temora

🏉 Luke Breust

Luke Breust's childhood on a farm outside Temora included both rugby league and Australian football. He made his senior debut for the local Kangaroos at sixteen, following his father's involvement in the club. A long Hawthorn career brought three premierships, but family and property ties continued to draw him back to the shire. Returning during shearing time could mean being recruited as a rouseabout, a different kind of teamwork from the MCG. Breust spoke about the importance of the country values he grew up with, and his connection to Temora continued well beyond junior football.

✈️ David Lowy

David Lowy founded Temora Aviation Museum to honour the aircraft and people who helped defend Australia. His choice of Temora combined the aerodrome's history with practical advantages for flying and maintaining a historic collection. The museum opened in June 2000 with aircraft he donated, followed by further exhibition buildings and a new display hangar. The project created an enduring aviation institution within the shire. Its later alliance with the RAAF broadened responsibility for important aircraft while retaining their Temora home, extending the original private initiative into a longer-term national partnership.

🐎 Colin and Shirley Pike

Colin and Shirley Pike's racing partnership made Temora a familiar name to harness-racing followers across Australia. Shirley owned Paleface Adios and Colin trained and drove him, including in his 1976 Miracle Mile victory. Both grew up locally, and their long family life ran alongside the demands of travelling and racing. Colin also contributed through the Temora Trotting Club and received the town's Citizen of the Year honour. Their story is remembered in the main-street monument to the Temora Tornado, with Colin seated behind the horse that he regarded as his best mate.
